We hope everyone enjoyed their gifts! Thank you so much to all participants for making Turing Fest's first year a success. (You could even say...a huge success?) We hope to see you all next year!

(Fun fact: A week from now is the birthday of the Turing Test's namesake. Happy early birthday, Alan Turing! Thank you for all your contributions to the world of computer science.)

Note that if your gift contains a stated DNW, appears to be created as an attack against you personally, is a placeholder, or is otherwise egregiously unsuited to be a gift, please contact the mods privately at turingfestmod@gmail.com.

Thanks to everyone who participated, and enjoy the collection!

All gifts are uploaded, and we are set to reveal on time in just under 7 hours! Countdown here.

AO3 has been buggy lately when it comes to revealing collections properly, so be warned that it may take a few minutes for all works to be completely revealed when the time comes. Until then, good luck with any last-minute edits or treats!*

(* Though, remember you can still upload treats at any time after reveals.)

The deadline for posting assignments has passed. We have two gifters who've been granted extensions on their assignments, and two pinch hits (see below). If you uploaded your assignment on time and don't yet have a gift, you're in one of those two groups.

Gift reveals are scheduled for June 9 at 11:59 PM UTC. (Countdown here.) Pinch hits should be completed and uploaded by then. If they aren't, reveals will be delayed as needed.

To claim one of the pinch hits below, comment below with your AO3 name and the PH # you want to claim, or email turingfestmod@gmail.com with the same information.

The deadline for uploading assignments is tonight at 11:59 PM UTC. Countdown here.

...However, since I made a timezone mistake and closed signups an hour earlier than intended, we're giving a 2 hour leniency period after the deadline tonight. This means you have two extra hours to post without being defaulted. Good luck, and contact the mods if you have any questions or troubles with uploading!

There are 6 days and a few hours until your assignments and previously-claimed pinch hits need to be uploaded to the collection (fully published, not as drafts!). Countdown here.

We still have one pinch hit that needs claiming! It and any pinch hits that come in after this date will be due as soon as possible before June 9.

There's 21 and a half days until the assignment deadline! If you've already made good progress on your gift(s), you might be looking for someone to beta them for you.

If you're down to beta someone else's work, post a comment here! The comment should include:

  • Your AO3 username

  • Email address you can be contacted by

  • What kind of beta service(s) are you offering (just spelling and grammar? canon accuracy? plot brainstorming?)

  • If you only want to beta for fandoms you know, what fandoms in the signup summary are you familiar with?

  • Is there any subject matter you aren't willing to beta for?

It has been brought to my attention that the clock I was following to judge UTC time was in fact an hour ahead of UTC, due to daylight savings time. As a result, signups closed an hour earlier than 11:59 PM UTC.

This is entirely my mistake, and I'm terribly sorry for any inconvenience that resulted! Unfortunately, matching has already been run and signups have been sent, so I can't reopen signups. All I can do is offer my apologies and promise to make sure this doesn't happen next year.

The assignment due date will be June 3, 11:59 PM actual UTC time. Countdown here.

Update: All initial PHs have been claimed!

There were no unmatchable participants (yay!), and matching went swimmingly. You should be receiving your assignment within the hour. (If you have emails from AO3 enabled you'll get an email notification about it, otherwise check your Assignments page on AO3.)

Your assignment is due on June 3, 11:59 PM UTC. Countdown here.

If you were assigned something you didn't actually offer, or there is some other major problem with your assignment, please email the mods at turingfestmod@gmail.com describing the issue. Please make sure to mention your AO3 name.

We also have two initial pinch hits, which are requests that came out of the matching process without gifters. To claim them, comment below with your AO3 name and the PH # you want to claim, or email turingfestmod@gmail.com with the same information.

(These pinch hits are due on the normal assignment due date of June 3, 11:59 PM UTC.)

Signups will close tonight at 11:59 PM UTC, which is probably earlier than 11:59 PM in your timezone! You can see a countdown here to know exactly how much time you have left.

The current signup summary can be found here, and all requests can be found here. Make sure that you have at least one person that you can write/draw for! (But don't worry if no one is offering your fandoms - that's what pinch hits are for.)

Requests summary
Signup summary

Signups for Turing Fest 2018 are open! Go forth and request your robots.

Signups will close on April 22 at 11:59 PM UTC. (Countdown!)

Please make sure to read the instructions on requesting and offering. If there is an egregious issue with your signup (e.g. you request "Any" but then DNW one of the nominated characters, you don't have at least 3 unique fandoms, you indicate that you only want an unnominated character), the mods will contact you via email explaining the problem and asking you to edit your signup. If you haven't done so by the time signups close, your signup will be deleted.

We have decided to allow participants to request individual fandoms multiple times with different character/ship tags, as long as they have a total of 3 unique fandoms. This is to accommodate participants who want to request more than 10 characters/ships in one fandom, but don't want to request "Any" in that fandom.

Acceptable signup:

Request 1: Fandom A
Request 2: Fandom B
Request 3: Fandom C

Acceptable signup:

Request 1: Fandom A
Request 2: Fandom B
Request 3: Fandom B
Request 4: Fandom C
Request 5: Fandom C

NOT acceptable signup:

Request 1: Fandom A
Request 2: Fandom A
Request 3: Fandom B

Another important note: Traditionally, AO3 has had a signup summary page where you can see every single fandom that's being requested and how many offers it has. However, that page has been nonfunctional recently. The mods have created a handmade version of the signup summary here.

Comment down below or contact the mods at turingfestmod@gmail.com if you have any questions or encounter any problems while signing up!

The nominations period is over! We reached a total of 198 fandoms and 1294 characters/ships. That's a lot of robots.

This is the current tagset. Feel free to look over it and comment on this post with any errors that need to be fixed (duplicate characters, egregious spelling errors, characters being in fandoms they shouldn't be, etc):

Clarifications:

Transformers - All Media Types
  • Blackout (Transformers) - Please nominate this character under a specific Transformers canon rather than All Media Types. (See the bottom of this post for the reasoning behind this.)

Janelle Monae - Works - SOLVED

SCP Foundation - SOLVED

Takeshi Kovacs Trilogy - Richard Morgan - SOLVED

Marvel Cinematic Universe - SOLVED

Formatting issues:

If you have an unapproved nom in any of the fandoms below, it is because you formatted it incorrectly. Please put "group: " before relationship noms, and provide a fandom in parentheses for every member of a Crossover Fandom relationship tag. Shortening things is fine if you run up against the AO3 character limit for tags:
  • Robot Series - Isaac Asimov

  • Original Work

  • Crossover Fandom

All Media Types fixes:

There are currently four approved fandoms in the tagset that end with "- All Media Types." While presumably a useful tool for AO3 wranglers, AMT tags cause issues in tagsets where characters show up in places they shouldn't be. As such, the mods need to move characters out of AMT and into more specific fandoms. As the mods are not experts on every franchise, please let us know which specific canons the characters below would best be categorized under (if a relationship includes characters from separate installments, "Crossover Fandom" is the correct answer):

Terminator - All Media Types
  • T-800

  • T-950

Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008) - All Media Types
  • group: Grievous | Qymaen jai Sheelal/Obi-Wan Kenobi

Star Wars Legends - All Media Types
  • WeeGee (Star Wars)

  • HK-01

  • group: Kyle Katarn & WeeGee

  • group: C-3PO & Jarred Sneel

Star Wars - All Media Types
  • group: C3PO/R2-D2 & BB-8

  • Group: C-3PO/R2-D2

  • Group: BB-8 & R2-D2

  • GNK Power Droid

We have more questions about nominated tags! Several of these are just formatting issues, others are simply due to a lack of easily searchable information online about the character in question.

Takeshi Kovacs Trilogy - Richard Morgan
  • Trepp (Takeshi Kovacs) - I can find references to a character named Trepp, but not any information about them. Please provide more information about this character.

For all of the nominations below, please provide fandoms in parentheses for every member of the relationship. Shortening things is fine if you run up against the AO3 character limit for tags:

As much as they would like to, the mods do not know every single canon out there. We trust that participants are nominating characters in good faith, but we'll still do a quick search on characters we're unfamiliar with to make sure the tags going through are correct. If you think that's a recipe for confusion (say, you nominated a character who shares a name with a popular human character in the same fandom, but you meant her android simulacrum incarnation from that one spinoff audio drama), drop a comment here to let the mods know in advance!

Nominations are open for business!

Turing Fest 2018 tagset

If you have any questions about noms that aren't answered below, comment on this post (anon is enabled) or email turingfestmod@gmail.com.

Important notes:

> Any canon can be nominated so long as it has at least one character that fits the theme of this exchange (and one of those characters is being nominated, whether solo or in a relationship tag). There are no requirements for media type, fandom rarity, or canon completeness.

> "Robotic" characters, for the purposes of this exchange, are characters in the realm of AIs, robots, androids, mecha, machines, cyborgs, and any other technology-focused characters.

> The mods want this to be a laid-back exchange in which fans can celebrate their favorite robotic characters. We trust that everyone is nominating in good faith, and we aren't interested in rigidly examining nominated characters to see if they meet strict standards of robot-ness. If you think canon treats them as appropriately robotic, go ahead and nominate them. The only time the mods might question or reject nominations is if the character appears to be egregiously not robotic - e.g. 100% human characters, or otherwise completely human characters with single prosthetic limbs who aren't treated by the canon as "cyborgs."

> If you think a google search for "[canon name] [character name]" would confuse the mods about whether a character you're nominating fits the theme of this exchange, feel free to comment on the Evidence Post and give us a heads-up. We will also have regular clarification posts throughout the nominations week, if we have questions about anyone's noms (or need them to make corrections to their formatting).

To reiterate the rules post:

> Each participant can nominate up to 10 fandoms, with up to 20 characters/ships in each fandom.

> To simplify things for the mods, relationships between two or more characters are still nominated as individual "characters." To nominate a relationship, nominate them by putting "group: " before their names, in the following format:

group: Character A/Character B

or

group: Character A & Character B

or

group: Character A/Character B & Character C

etc.

> There are two types of relationships you can nominate: Romantic relationships are indicated by a / sign between the characters' names. The / indicates that you want the relationship between the characters to be romantic and/or sexual. Platonic relationships are indicated by an & sign between the characters' names. The & indicates that you want the relationship between the characters to be friendship or familial.

> Please nominate crossover relationships under the fandom "Crossover Fandom." When nominating them, please use the format "group: Character A (Fandom 1)/Character B (Fandom 2)."

> Please nominate original characters and relationships under the fandom "Original Work." Using descriptive character names is a good idea. "Female Android" and "Robot Dog" are pretty vague, while "Female Android Assassin" and "Robot Seeing Eye Dog" give a better idea of what potential requesters/offerers would want out of those characters. Note: If you want to request an original relationship but only want it in a particular gender combination, it is your responsibility to nominate that gender combination. DNWing a particular gender combination after requesting a gender-neutral ship tag will not be an enforceable DNW.

> For simplicity's sake, please nominate all real-life robots and AIs under the fandom "Technology RPF."

Nominations will close on close on April 13 at 11:59 PM UTC. (Countdown!)
