Welcome to the fourth round of Turing Fest, a fanwork exchange for robotic characters!
"Robotic" characters, for the purposes of this exchange, are characters in the realm of AIs, robots, androids, mecha, machines, cyborgs, and other technology-focused characters.
By signing up for this exchange, you're committing to create a gift for at least one person, and receive a gift in return. Gifts can be either fanfiction (800 words minimum) or fanart (at least finished lineart, on unlined paper if drawing traditionally).
This exchange shifted to a later schedule last year, but this year will return to a schedule more closely resembling the original (slightly earlier) 2018/2019 schedule! Additionally, we have changed our time zone from CST to UTC. Otherwise, we remain the same Turing Fest you know and love and we are so happy to be back. The rules and requirements are identical to the previous year's.

Schedule
Nominations open - Sunday, April 11
Nominations close - Sunday, April 18 (11:59 PM UTC)
Signups open - Monday, April 19
Signups close - Sunday, May 2 (11:59 PM UTC)
Assignments due - Sunday, June 6 (11:59 PM UTC)
Gift reveals - Sunday, June 13 (11:59 PM UTC)
Author reveals - Sunday, June 20 (11:59 PM UTC)
We're using UTC as the timezone for deadlines, which means the actual deadline may be earlier in your timezone! Countdowns will be posted for all major deadlines, so you can have an easy reference and make your plans accordingly.
Eligibility
The mods want this to be a laid-back exchange where fans can celebrate their favorite robotic characters. As such, we're not interested in strictly policing what counts as a robotic character. We trust that participants are nominating in good faith. The only time we may reject a nomination is if the character is egregiously not-robotic - e.g. 100% human characters, or otherwise completely human characters with single prosthetic limbs.
> If you think a google search for "[canon name] [character name]" wouldn't turn up obvious evidence that a character you're nominating fits the theme of this exchange, feel free to comment on the Evidence Post and give us a heads-up. We will also have regular clarification posts throughout the nominations week, if we have questions about anyone's noms (or need them to make corrections to their formatting).
> RRF (Real Robot Fiction) and original robotic characters are eligible.
> Group relationships are eligible, so long as at least one character in the group is eligible for this exchange. Romantic/sexual relationships, platonic relationships, and combinations thereof are all welcome.
Nominations
Nominations is the process of electing characters/ships that can be requested and offered in this exchange. You cannot request or offer characters who haven't been nominated. Nominations open on April 19, and close on May 3 at 11:59 PM Central.
The 2021 tagset can be found here.
> Each participant can nominate up to 10 fandoms, with up to 20 characters/ships in each fandom.
> To simplify things for the mods, relationships between two or more characters are still nominated as individual "characters." To nominate a relationship, nominate them by putting "group: " before their names, in the following format:
group: Character A/Character B
or
group: Character A & Character B
or
group: Character A/Character B & Character C
etc.
> There are two types of relationships you can nominate: Romantic relationships are indicated by a / sign between the characters' names. The / indicates that you want the relationship between the characters to be romantic and/or sexual. Platonic relationships are indicated by an & sign between the characters' names. The & indicates that you want the relationship between the characters to be friendship or familial.
> Please nominate crossover relationships under the fandom "Crossover Fandom." When nominating them, please use the format "group: Character A (Fandom 1)/Character B (Fandom 2)."
> Please nominate original characters and relationships under the fandom "Original Work." Using descriptive character names is a good idea. "Female Android" and "Robot Dog" are pretty vague, while "Female Android Assassin" and "Robot Seeing Eye Dog" give a better idea of what potential requesters/offerers would want out of those characters. If you have a gender preference for an original ship (e.g. you want "Navigation AI/Spaceship Pilot," but only if they're both female), the onus is on you to nominate the ship with genders included in the names (e.g. nominate "Female Navigation AI/Female Spaceship Pilot"). The mods will not honor a DNW for a specific gender combination when requesting a gender-neutral ship.
> For simplicity's sake, please nominate all real-life robots and AIs under the fandom "Technology RPF."
Signing Up
Once nominations are closed and sorted out, mods will open signups. When signing up, you choose what characters/ships you'd like to receive a gift about, and what characters/ships you'll offer to create a gift about. You can only request and offer characters/relationships that are in the tagset.
> You can request 3-10 fandoms, with 1-10 characters/ships per fandom. You can request either fanart, fanfiction, or both.
> Note: You can request an individual fandom more than once with different character/ship tags, but only if you also request at least 3 total unique fandoms. A request that consists of Fandom A, Fandom B, and Fandom C is fine. A request that consists of Fandom A, Fandom B, Fandom C, and Fandom C is fine. A request that consists of Fandom A, Fandom A, and Fandom A is not allowed. If you do not have at least three unique fandoms in your requests by the time signups close, your signup will be deleted.
> You can offer 4-10 fandoms, with 1-10 characters/ships per fandom. You can offer either fanart, fanfiction, or both.
> The "Any" box means "any character in this fandom that has been nominated for this exchange." It does not mean "any character in the fandom as a whole!" Use this option wisely.
> In the "Description" section of the signup form, write out some prompts for your gifter to get a better idea of what you want. It's generally a good idea to list out some tropes or kinks that you tend to like, as well as give some prompts specific to your requested characters/ships.
> You can also include DNWs (Do Not Wants), which are things you don't want to see in your gift. These can include anything, but please don't use them to try and railroad your gifter into making one exact type of gift (e.g. "DNW anything except a coffeeshop AU where everyone struggles with finicky zero-gravity espresso machines"). Also, please don't use DNWs that contradict your requests (e.g. requesting a "/" relationship and then DNWing shipping).
> Please note that this exchange uses "or" matching, and your gifter is only required to create something based on one of your characters/ships.
> "Dear author" letters are not required, but they are welcome and encouraged! A letters post will go up on the dreamwidth comm once signups are open.
Assignments
Once signups are closed, the process of matching gifters to recipients will begin.
> If you aren't able to be matched as a recipient, your requests will go out as an initial pinch hit. You don't have to do anything, and can start working on your own assignment!
> If you aren't able to be matched as a gifter (i.e. nobody's requesting what you're offering), we will make a post mentioning that we have unmatchable participants. Then we will send you an email asking you to add to your requests, so everyone please check their email!
> For your assignment, you are required to create a gift focusing on at least one of your recipient's requested characters/ships, in one of their requested mediums, while respecting their DNWs. Fic must be at least 800 words minimum, and art should be at minimum finished lineart (on unlined paper, if drawing traditionally).
> If you have questions about your assignment, and want to ask something of your recipient, please don't contact your recipient directly! Instead, email the mods, and we will act as an intermediary.
Defaulting
Defaulting is dropping your commitment to create your assignment. If, for whatever reason, you feel you can't write or draw what your recipient is requesting, please default ASAP, so the mods can find a new gifter for that request, and they can have plenty of time to work on it.
> There are no penalties for defaulting, except the following: If you default, and the gifter assigned to you also defaults, you will not be sent out as a pinch hit.
> To default, go to your Assignments tab on AO3. You'll see an option to either fulfill or default on your current assignment. Click Default, and the mods will be automatically notified; there's no need to contact us.
Pinch Hits
A pinch hit is an assignment that, because of defaults or bad luck during matching, does not have a gifter assigned to it. Since everyone deserves a gift, these assignments need to find someone new willing to write/draw them.
> Pinch hits will be posted to the dreamwidth comm. To claim them, comment on the PH post with your AO3 username and the number of the PH you want to claim. (Comments will be screened.)
> Pinch hits are first come, first serve, so the mods will assign the request to whoever asks for it first. You will receive an email notification from AO3 that you have a new assignment if you successfully claimed a PH.
> You do not have to be signed up to claim a pinch hit.
> Your pinch hit is still due at the normal due date, if you claimed it more than a week before the due date. Any pinch hits that are claimed less than a week before the due date will be due ASAP before the reveals date.
Treats
A treat is an extra gift you've made for someone you aren't necessarily assigned to.
> Treats do not have to meet the minimum length requirements (800 words/finished lineart on unlined paper), but they do have to be for one of the participant's requests, and steer clear of their DNWs.
> You do not have to be signed up to write or draw treats. The more the merrier!
> Treats can be posted at any time, even after the exchange is over. The collection will remain open until next year's Turing Fest to allow people to post treats.
> To post a treat, click the "Post to Collection" button on the Turing Fest 2021 collection page. Post the gift as you would normally, but make sure you put the username of the person you're treating in the "Gift this work to" box.
Other
> Please comment on your gifts once they're revealed! It's not a rule, but one of the best parts of exchanges is knowing that your recipient enjoyed what you created for them.
> This exchange is not the place for you to kinkshame, ship-bash, or otherwise harass other fans. If you don't like what another participant is requesting, don't offer it. If you don't like what another participant has written/drawn, don't click on it. Being a jerk to other people within the context of this exchange is the (probably only) way to get yourself banned. (This includes writing spitefic/the art equivalent of spitefic. This exchange is not the place for you to take out your grudges on other fans.)
If you have any other questions or concerns, feel free to comment on this post (anon is enabled) or email the mods!
